DU Admissions: Seats vacant in the EWS quota due to high cutoffs

DU Admissions: Seats vacant in the EWS quota due to high cutoffs

According to the reports, only 27 percent of the seats are filled under the newly introduced EWS quota for the students in the Delhi University. The main reason behind this is the unexpected higher cutoffs for various courses. When the reservation for the EWS category students (from the General category) was announced many students rejoiced but according to the data available on the DU’s website only 27 percent seats have been filled due to high cutoffs for the category. A total of only 1527 students have been admitted in the university under the EWS category though the university has 5600 seats. Students and professors both blame the high cut-offs decided by the university for the students from the EWS category. Under the third cut-off list of Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) the cut-off marks for admissions in BA Economic (Hons) for the EWS category students were 97.25 percent. In Ramjas college, the cut-off marks for admissions in Economics (Hon) for the EWS category students was 97 percent and for the students from the general category was 97.5. “In the initial cut-offs, the admissions were very slow under the EWS category. The students have complained about the high cut-offs,“ a senior faculty who manages admissions said. The officials added that the trend might change in the later cut-off lists when colleges will face empty seats.

Industry-ready graduates are the need of the hour

Industry-ready graduates are the need of the hour

On Wednesday, experts, in Bhubaneshwar, put emphasis on making the students industry-ready as soon as they complete their education from college or University. They said this as they discussed the draft of the National Education Policy at a state-level meeting. Arun Kumar Sahoo, the Higher education minister said that center must increase the allocation for the school and higher education. He stressed that a mere three percent will not solve the problems of education. “Odisha has tribals, more than 22 per cent of the state’s population. We should keep their interest in mind while preparing the policy. Equity in education should be a major focus. Besides, the Centre should keep the need of the state while preparing the policy,” said Sahoo in the meeting. Vice-chairman of Odisha State Higher Education Council, Asoka Kumar Das, said that policy should be prepared in such a way that it is able to bring the excellence in the field of education and it should also focus on making the students industry-ready. “The policy is a good one. But we will give our necessary comments. Industries should spend their corporate social responsibility fund for the training and research of the state students,” he added. Siba Prasad Adhikary, an educationist and former vice-chancellor of FM University, said that problems such as teacher vacancy has long plagued our education system and must be solved to improve the outcome of the sector. Basudev Bhatta, chairman of Odisha Abhibhabak Mahasangha, stressed on increasing the allocations for the education sector. CSR funds must be utilized in education. “After completion of study from colleges and universities, there should be a database of all students to follow up their employment status later,” he added.

Khapra and Dr. Pratyush Kumar, both are assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Madras. “AI is one of the defining technologies of this age. However, much of the research in AI today is driven by the problems of the West. For instance, building autonomous cars takes priority over building systems that can monitor the condition of rural roads”, Dr. Pratyush Kumar said while speaking about the role of AI in today’s context. “We need to change this by shifting the focus to India. This is where domain experts and the government would play an important role - identify problems that are unique to India and can benefit from AI,” he added. “To solve such problems it is important to move AI research and development out of silos and create a platform where AI professionals can come together to design and build impactful solutions. With this in mind, our immediate goal is to create a community of 100 selected AI experts and 50 domain experts,” Dr. Mitesh M. Khapra said.

School enrollments in Gujarat: Gujarat government’s data does match with the official records on school enrollment

School enrollments in Gujarat: Gujarat government’s data does match with the official records on school enrollment

Recently, Gujarat government claimed that it had achieved the enrollment of 99 percent in the schools through various drives in the state but, records show that a large number of children remain untracked in 2017 and 2018. According to the records of the Civil Registration System (CRS), the state government has recorded 12,14,550 births in the state in 2011. Fast forward 5 years i.e. 2016-17 when a child turns five or six (school-going age) records show that only 7,00,245 children were enrolled in government schools, 3,81,255 in private schools and 45,365 in private schools under the Right to Education (RTE) Act. This leaves behind 87,685 children (nearly 7 percent) which remain untracked in any of the official records of the government. Similarly in 2012, according to the CRS data 12,15,066 childbirths were recorded but admission data under DISE shows that 6,95,537 children were enrolled in government schools, 3,90,882 in private schools and another 55,100 got enrolled under the RTE Act. Here, 73,547 children remain untracked in the state records. When questioned about these untracked children, principal secretary, education, Vinod Rao said, “We are aware of these numbers and that is why the aim of the upgraded Praveshotsav 2.0 is to trace all the children and enroll them during the drive which will continue till August 31. However, we cannot also rule out the possibility that these students are enrolled in some private schools where there has been no data entry.” Time and again the state government has claimed that is has achieved 99 percent enrollment in schools through special drives such as shala praveshotsav, kanya kelavani mahotsav and Vidyalakshmi bond. According to the official records of the government, the enrollment for the boys in 2015-16 was 99.05, which touched the scale of 99.34 in 2016-17 and 99.28 in 2017-18. Similarly, for the girls the numbers show that enrollment was 98.22 in 2016-17 and reached 98.92, and 98.99 in 2017-18. “The fact that here we are talking about enrollment only should be kept in mind too. So far, there was no system to check whether these are actual enrollments or merely on papers to impress the officials or to escape from inquiries on low enrollment numbers,” said a senior education official.
